About Jim Gallagher
Jim Gallagher is a creative powerhouse whose career spans over 30 years as a producer, director, audio engineer, educator, and poet. With a legacy rooted in the vibrant music and film industries, Jim has collaborated with legendary artists, influenced countless students, and contributed significantly to the arts and education.
A Storied Career in Music and Film
Jim began his career at Philadelphia’s iconic Sigma Sound Studios, where he helped create Platinum and Gold records with music legends such as Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, The Spinners, Teddy Pendergrass, B.B. King, and Johnny Mathis. He later became the Studio Manager and Chief Engineer at Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records’ Studio 309, where he modernized operations and worked on groundbreaking projects associated with the Sound of Philadelphia.
As a freelance audio engineer, Jim earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered LP and contributed to notable works, including Patti LaBelle’s Grammy-winning album “Burnin’”, tracks for Spike Lee’s film School Daze, and projects with Michael Sembello, Phyllis Hyman, and Stanley Clarke. His expertise also extends to film, where he has edited and mixed works like Family Gathering (Oscar-nominated) and Gabrielle’s Story (award-winning).
Excellence in Education
Jim’s passion for knowledge and mentorship has left an indelible mark in higher education. At institutions such as Temple University, Rowan University, and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Jim created innovative courses in audio production, film, and media arts, earning awards for Excellence in Teaching and Honored Faculty. As the Academic Director at the Art Institute, he developed and led programs in Digital Filmmaking, Web Design, Visual Effects, and Audio Production, shaping the next generation of creative professionals.
Leadership and Advocacy
Jim has been elected five times to the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), where he chaired key committees, including MusicCares® and Special Projects. His leadership extended to labor advocacy as a trustee for the Local 3397 Faculty Federation Teacher’s Union, and he remains committed to supporting the arts community.
A Renaissance Man
Beyond his contributions to music and education, Jim is a published poet whose works have appeared in American Writing, The Penn Review, and other esteemed publications. His poetry collection, Between Moonrise and Sunset: The Lightness and the Dark, is a testament to his creative depth.
As a songwriter, Jim has written and produced four CDs of original music, including Trust in Love, The Light and the Dark, and It’s All About Love. His recent release, The Gray Album, showcases his talent for instrumental composition.
